THE KYOTO BOX

Author: admin

The Kyoto Box is a solar cardboard box to cook food and boil water by harnessing solar power. This is an amazing box developed by Jon Boehmer, a Norwegian based in Kenya as part of the go green contest organized by the Forum of the Future. This is the most cheapest (at six dollars) version of the solar oven or cooker and also very practical and useful. This box will help 3 billion people worldwide, who depend on firewood for their basic cooking needs. This in turn will cut the greenhouse gases, and save trees, and contribute in fighting global warming.

T-20 ATOP MOUNT EVEREST

The world’s highest ever cricket game is to be played on Mount Everest, by two British teams named after Tenzing and Hillary. This is a T-20 match to be played on April 21st. on a frozen lake near the Khumbu glacier, which is going to be televised. This match is for charity to rise funds for The Himalayan Trust, UK, set up by Hillary in aid of the Sherpa community. There are criticisms from certain quarters voicing concern that already the mountain climbers are polluting the Himalayas and the Everest has earned the nickname of being the world’s highest dumping yard. It is felt that this is an entirely silly and avoidable adventure.

Chennai was called Madras a few years ago. The name was changed to remove the colonial influence and to give the city its native name. History suggests that the pre-British name of Madras was not Chennai, but Madras-pattinam. The northern part of the city was called Madras-pattinam before the British coined the name Chennaipattinam to refer to the area around the Fort. The name Chennai was coined in honour of Chennappa Nayak whose son granted the land. So, actually instead of going back to the native name, the reverse is being done, as Chennai was the name given by the British.

Go Green is the new mantra now in every field including real estate or while constructing houses or buildings or while redesigning old ones. According to Colliers International, Asia’s first real estate guide, authored by Simon carter, residential and commercial buildings contribute to almost 15.3% of the world’s greenhouse emissions.
The challenge lies in spreading information about green buildings, to be eco friendly, save energy, managing waste, reducing operational cost and using the right material. Eco friendly buildings are more expensive than conventional ones but in the long run they save upto 40 to 80 % of the energy costs. All over the world quite a few companies have adopted these eco friendly measures in the construction of hotels, buildings and houses.
