Iodine – Occurrence

Though most of the Group XVII elements are found widely, Iodine is said to be a rare element. They are found to rank 62nd in their abundance on earth. They are widely found in dissolved state in seawater. But some minerals and soils are also found to contain them. However they are found in small traces in the mineral called caliches in Chile. Kelp, seaweed is said to have higher concentration of the element. Iodomethane is the common form of the element in marine life forms. It is estimated that marine environment and other related microbial activity produces about 214 kilo tonnes of total iodomethane.
