CHENNAIPATTINAM OR MADRAS-PATTINAM
Author: adminChennai was called Madras a few years ago. The name was changed to remove the colonial influence and to give the city its native name. History suggests that the pre-British name of Madras was not Chennai, but Madras-pattinam. The northern part of the city was called Madras-pattinam before the British coined the name Chennaipattinam to refer to the area around the Fort. The name Chennai was coined in honour of Chennappa Nayak whose son granted the land. So, actually instead of going back to the native name, the reverse is being done, as Chennai was the name given by the British.
